About Us

office 1Spectrum Books Limited was incorporated as a private limited liability company on 12th June 1978 and commenced publishing business with the aim of realizing the vision of its promoters and founding fathers.  The company started with a clear mission of changing the publishing landscape not only in Nigeria but Africa through a combination of dynamic and dialectical intervention in academic/educational and special publications.  Our mission was informed by desire to publish not only lucidly written textbooks and other academic works but to chart a new course in publishing special projects/books such as biographies, journals and general interest books.

Towards realisation of our vision, we moved out of the ‘incubator’ – a hotel room to Jubilee House in Ibadan (citadel of learning and scholarship in sub-Saharan Africa) in February 1978, with a few pioneer members of staff and guaranteed technical support of Safari Books Limited, Faber & Faber, W. R. Chambers, Associated Book Publishers, John Wiley & Sons and DP Publications.

Our major breakthrough in charting a new course in special publishing and engendering a culture of recording events for posterity came in 1982 with the publication of EMEKA – a dramatic and powerful life-story of philosopher, army general and rebel written by Frederick Forsyth.  This reality of a vision was not only celebrated by us but nationally as captured in the editorial comments of the largest and most authoritative newspaper – Daily Times ‘a bold and imaginative re-direction of focus by a publishing house’.

Like the dexterous sculptor, (a’la Ben Enwonwu) we strove ceaselessly to improve the quality of scholarly/academic publications through encouragement of the best of Nigerian intellectuals in various specializations such as medicine, law, literature and expand the scope of the new world of special publications. The collection of our texts and authors attests to the fact that we represent the best of Nigerian intellectuals and these few titles confirm the extent of scope and quality that we have achieved.
